Diagnosing congenital heart disease
Congenital heart disease is the most common type of birth abnormality that happens during the earliest weeks of pregnancy, when the heart is developing. In most cases, the cause of an abnormality is unknown, so it cannot be prevented.
Your child's doctor may use several different imaging tests to diagnose their heart condition, including:
- Cardiac catheterization, including interventional
- Chest X-rays
- Computerized tomography (CT) scans
- Echocardiograms, including fetal echocardiograms
- Electrocardiograms (EKG)
- Electrophysiology procedures
- Exercise tests
- Holter monitoring
- Laboratory tests
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans
Fetal echocardiograms
Sometimes we can identify congenital heart disease before your baby is born. You may be referred to our fetal heart program for a fetal echocardiogram if your doctor suspects a heart abnormality during a prenatal ultrasound. A fetal echocardiogram is a special type of ultrasound that allows us to diagnose heart abnormalities while your baby is still in the womb.
Congenital heart surgery
If your child is born with a heart abnormality, their condition might require surgery. Heart surgery is necessary if we cannot fix the issue with a catheter or medication.
Sometimes a single surgery can correct the issue. In other cases, your child may need more than one surgery over months, years or throughout their lifetime. Our team is here for your child every step of the way, caring for them with a family-centered approach that includes:
- Ensuring that you can stay with your child up until the moment we take them to the operating room
- Giving you updates while your child is in surgery
- Offering a primary waiting area and a child-friendly waiting area with various activities
- Taking you to your child's side as soon as possible, once surgery is finished
Hybrid heart procedures
Depending on your child's specific case, a hybrid heart procedure might be the best treatment option for them. Hybrid procedures combine the tools and techniques of interventional cardiology and heart surgery. Using this approach, along with our expertise, we provide care for complex congenital heart abnormalities.
