Southern Hills Hospital performs first cryoballoon procedure

The first groundbreaking AFib ablation procedure using Cryoballoon technology was performed by the team at Southern Hill's cath lab.

Southern Hills Hospital & Medical Center is proud to announce the successful completion of its first Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) ablation using Cryoballoon technology. Dr. Claudio Bonometti and Southern Hills Hospital's cath lab team performed this groundbreaking procedure, significantly advancing cardiac care capabilities for patients.

Atrial Fibrillation, a common heart rhythm disorder affecting millions of people worldwide, can lead to severe complications such as stroke if left untreated. Southern Hills Hospital has been treating AFib patients using Radiofrequency (RF) ablation technology for the past year. The introduction of Cryoballoon ablation represents a new era in the hospital's treatment options.

Cryoballoon ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that uses freezing energy to treat certain types of AFib.  By making a small puncture in the groin, leg, or arm, a catheter is then inserted and threaded into the left atrium of the heart.  At this point, the cryoballoon catheter is inserted into the designated area, and the balloon is inflated, filling it with liquid refrigerant to freeze tissue and turn off unwanted electrical signals that contribute to AFib. The procedure usually takes one to two hours.

"We are thrilled to bring this advanced technology to our community," said Southern Hills Hospital's CEO Alexis Mussi. "This successful procedure is a testament to our ongoing commitment to delivering the highest standard of care to our patients."

The hospital's leadership and staff extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved in making this milestone possible. The team's dedication and expertise continue to elevate the quality of care provided at Southern Hills Hospital, and we sincerely appreciate their contributions.
