Emergency care
Emergency care is the treatment of unexpected, severe medical injuries or infections. It is typically delivered in an emergency room or an ambulance. Our emergency medicine physicians stabilize your condition as quickly as possible to prepare you for the next step of care or discharge.

Extracorporeal life support (ECLS)
ECLS is a potentially lifesaving technique mimicking the natural function of your heart and lungs, allowing you to rest while natural healing of your affected organs takes place. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a form of ECLS.
You might be a candidate for ECMO if you have severe heart or lung failure, you're not responding to standard medical treatments and you're unlikely to survive without this treatment. You might also be on a breathing machine (ventilator) with high settings and receiving a large amount of heart medication to maintain your blood pressure. You must have a reversible illness and good brain function for ECMO to have a chance of working.
You may benefit from ECMO if you're experiencing:
- Acute respiratory distress syndrome
- Heart failure
- High blood pressure in your lungs
- Pneumonia
- Severe forms of influenza
Additionally, we might use ECMO to extend time before implanting a ventricular assist device or performing a transplant. We can also use ECMO to treat children who fit the criteria.
Emergency medical transport
We enhance the critical care services of our hospital through several partnerships, including our emergency medical services (EMS) community partnership with CareFlight Air Ambulance, Life Guard International - Flying ICU and MedicWest Ambulance.
Pediatric emergency care
Our emergency room (ER) specialists can treat both adults and children, but in some cases your child's condition might require a specialized approach.
If this is the case, we can admit them to the pediatric emergency department at Sunrise Children's Hospital. These doctors are board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine, and the hospital provides a child-friendly environment. Both of these factors demonstrate our commitment to ensuring your child receives excellent care and feels more at ease.
Stroke care
As a Stroke Specialty CARF-accredited facility, we have the expertise and capability to care for individuals who have experienced a cerebrovascular accident (stroke). We are also a certified stroke center by The Joint Commission. Our physicians are trained in stroke rehabilitation, and the same physicians who cared for you after your stroke will follow up on your care.
Our team not only specializes in identifying stroke symptoms and administering high-level treatment, but we also maintain high standards to help you work towards regaining your physical strength and support functions. We can also treat you with clot-busting medication for an acute stroke within 60 minutes if you're a candidate for it.
When to visit an ER
When a situation becomes urgent or life-threatening, it is important to seek medical attention right away.
Symptoms that need an emergency department
You should prioritize an ER visit if you are experiencing:
- Chronic conditions that worsen, such as asthma, low blood sugar and severe seizures
- Mental illness that has become dangerous to yourself or others
- Numbness or weakness in your arm or leg
- Numbness or weakness on one side of your body
- Serious injuries, such as a deep cut, bad fall and fainting
- Sudden chest pain
Check ER wait times
Wait times are an important factor in determining where to go for care. When you text "ER" to 32222 and reply with your ZIP code, you can get our average ER wait times sent directly to your phone. Message and data rates may apply.
