The Sunrise Health System of Hospitals Awarded Re-certification as Primary Stroke Centers from the Joint Commission
Distinction recognizes hospitals for offering the best possible treatment for stroke patients
Las Vegas, NV — After undergoing on-site evaluations and demonstrating compliance with nationally developed standards for stroke care, the Sunrise Health System of Hospitals — Sunrise Hospital, MountainView Hospital and Southern Hills Hospital — have earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for re-certification as Primary Stroke Centers. Sunrise Health was the first system of Certified Primary Stroke Centers in Las Vegas.
In order to receive re-certification, the Sunrise Health System hospitals were evaluated by The Joint Commission — the leading healthcare accreditation and certification organization in the United States — using standards for stroke from the recommendations published by the Brain Attack Coalition and American Stroke Association. This includes an assessment of compliance with consensus-based national standards, effective use of primary stroke center recommendations and clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care and performance measurement and improvement activities.
“We are proud to achieve this distinction again from the Joint Commission,” said Todd P. Sklamberg, Chief Executive Officer at Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center. “Along with our Accredited Chest Pain Centers, both our heart and stroke care programs at all three hospitals provide optimal care for patients needing emergent care.”
The Certified Stroke Centers at each Sunrise Health Hospital offer diagnosis, treatment, education and outreach. A trained Stroke Team of doctors and nurses works to identify stroke symptoms as quickly as possible, beginning with emergency medical service workers in the field. By the time a patient arrives at the hospital, the Stroke Team is ready. The hospitals of Sunrise Health were first certified as primary stroke centers in 2009.
According to the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association, stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and a leading cause of serious, long-term disability. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 45 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every three minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
